Mafra Nacional Palace and Convent
Mafra Palace and Convent built in the 18th Century by the order of King João V in fulfillment of a vow he made to be blessed with an heir.
The building was made in limestone and marble of the region and has 1.200 rooms, more than 4.700 doors and windows, 156 stairways, 29 inner yards and courtyards, and an amazing library with 36.000 volumes.
It’s considered the most important baroque monument in the country.
Aldeia Tipica José Franco
The sculptor José Franco dedicated his whole life to the art of modelling clay.
He built a perfect life-size village, with shops and houses displaying the typical architecture of the region and furnished on the inside, as well as a windmill, butcher’s shop, water-mill, blacksmith’s forge, threshing floor, tavern, carpenter’s workshop, etc.
Ericeira
Considered one of Europe’s best ‘small destinations’! Ericeira is a quite ancient town, believed to be connected with the Phoenicians.
The sea has always had an essential role for the village and it was a very important port during the 19th century.
This is the place where the Portuguese royal family escaped to their exile after the 1908 regicide.
Ericeira is a popular beach destination, known for its natural beauty, welcoming atmosphere and delicious seafood.
Recently Ericeira has become very well known for Surfing and is considered, since 2011 as World Surfing Reserve.
Forte do Zambujal
Fort built to defend Portuguese territory from Napoleon’s French invasions in the early 19th century.
It is a place worth visiting for its history. Between November 1809 and September 1810, a defensive system was built in secret, which today constitutes a valuable historical and military heritage
