The Private Jewish Heritage Tour of Lisboa tour focused on Lisboa’s history and its strong connection with the Jewish community.
A long and intricate history that began even before the founding of the kingdom of Portugal and continued through years of persecution and religious intolerance.
In Lisboa’s historic center, you can feel these strong ties between the Jewish community and Portuguese culture, which we are so proud to preserve.
Discover the best sites, important artifacts, and stories that bring Lisbon’s Jewish heritage to life in a truly surprising way.
Alfama Neighborhood
The Alfama neighborhood is a maze of narrow streets and winding alleys. It is the oldest neighborhood in the city and the site of a small Jewish neighborhood in the 14th century.
São Domingos Church
The 13th-century São Domingos Church was the first Dominican church in Lisbon.
For centuries, it was considered the most important church in Lisbon, where beautiful weddings and royal baptisms took place.
There ar a monument and a mural in the square in front of the church, inaugurated in 2008, which reads “Lisbon, the City of Tolerance” in 34 languages, remembering the terrible episode of 1506, which began in this church, and paying tribute to the Jewish victims.
Lisbon synagogue
Opened in 1904, the Shaaré Tikvah Synagogue (Doors of Hope) was the first synagogue built in Portugal after the expulsion decreed by King Manuel I in 1496.
It is located in the central area of Lisbon and does not have a façade facing the public space because, at the time of its construction, the law prohibited any temple that was not Catholic from having a façade facing the street, so as not to “offend” the gaze of passers-by.
This synagogue is the centre of religious life for the Jewish Community of Lisbon.
When the contemporary community of Lisbon was created in the 19th century, the State of Israel did not yet exist, and the word “Israel” was synonymous with “Jewish”.
This community has its origins in the 19th century, among Sephardic families from North Africa and Gibraltar who, after the abolition of the Inquisition in 1821, began to return to Portugal.
Belém district
The launching point for the Portuguese discoveries, with significant historic monuments in a beautiful open riverside setting.

And taste the world-famous custard tarts of Belém (Pasteis de Belem).
