Description

The Templars are one of the most fascinating and mysterious military orders in history, and Portugal played a significant role in their existence. A tour of the Knights Templar sites in Portugal offers an exciting opportunity to explore this medieval legacy and delve into stories of courage, religion and power.

On the Knights Templar Private Tour, we will visit monuments related to one of the most intriguing religious and military orders in the world; the Order of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon. The story has been a mystery for many centuries. Even today there are still many things to discover.

The order of the Knights Templar was founded in the early 12th century with the aim of protecting the Holy Sepulcher and Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land; the name comes from its original headquarters – Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. It was these powerful knight monks who helped the first king of Portugal in the war against the Moors during the “Christian Reconquista”.

Highlights

Almourol Castle

The castle was rebuilt in 1171 by the first Templar Grand Master Gualdim Pais. Since it was built on an island in the middle of the Tagus River, access would have to be done by boat

Constância Village

On the way to Tomar, visit a small typical Protuguesa village, with just a few hundred inhabitants, to taste a traditional conventual sweet from the region; the Cheeses from Heaven, made by the Carmelite sisters.

Tomar Historic Center

Stroll through the historic center of Tomar and visit some of its most interesting monuments; the churches of ‘São João Baptista’ and ‘Santa Maria do Olival’ and the oldest synagogue in Portugal.

Tomar Castle

Built by Grand Master D. Gualdim Pais, in 1160, as the headquarters of the religious and military order of the Knights Templar.

Convent of the Order of Christ

After the extinction of the Knights Templar in 1312, King D. Dinis created a new religious militia, the Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ, stating the need to defend Portugal from the Moors.
The headquarters of the Order of Christ was created in the former headquarters of the Knights Templar in 1357, where it will remain for centuries. Considered one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe, it was classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1983.
During the visit you will see; Charola, the round temple of the Knights Templar; the western window, unique in the world and designed in Portuguese late Gothic style and the main cloister, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.
