Cabo Espichel

A Meeting Between History, Nature and Mystery

Located on the western coast of Portugal, in the Sesimbra region, Cabo Espichel is one of the most impressive and iconic destinations in the country.

Combining stunning landscapes, rich history and a touch of mysticism, this place attracts visitors in search of tranquility, adventure and culture.

Breathtaking Landscapes

Cabo Espichel is famous for its dramatic cliffs, which rise more than 100 metres above the Atlantic.
The view is breathtaking, especially at sunset, when the sky takes on golden and pink hues. The force of the sea and the constant wind have shaped this place, creating a unique atmosphere, perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

The trails along the cape offer unforgettable experiences for hikers. Along the way, you can see impressive geological formations and even fossils of dinosaur footprints, preserved in the rock for millions of years.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Cabo Espichel

One of the most important historical landmarks of Cabo Espichel is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape, a religious complex that dates back to the 14th century.

This site is surrounded by legends and religious traditions, and has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries.

The sanctuary includes the main church, built in the Baroque style, and the inns that housed pilgrims.
Its austere architecture contrasts with the grandeur of the natural landscape, creating an atmosphere of introspection and spirituality.

Legends and Mysteries

Cabo Espichel is also the scene of intriguing legends. One of the best-known is that of the Virgin Mary appearing to two local peasants, riding a mule.
According to the story, the mule’s footprints were left on the rocks of the cape – which many believe are actually dinosaur footprints.
This mix of history, religion and science gives Cabo Espichel a mystical aura that fascinates both locals and visitors.

Cape Espichel Lighthouse

Another highlight is the Cabo Espichel Lighthouse, inaugurated in 1790.
This lighthouse, still in operation, is one of the oldest in Portugal.
In addition to its importance for navigation, it is a symbol of man’s resistance against the force of the sea. A visit to the lighthouse (by appointment only, and on specific days) offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the maritime history of the region.
