Welcome to the incredible tour of the Lousã and Schist Villages
Serra da Lousã is located in central Portugal, and its main attraction is the Schist Villages.
Cerdeira, Candal, and Talasnal are mountain villages with centuries-old houses made of schist, a dark-colored laminated rock.
The mountain range also has other tourist attractions such as the Trevim Swing, located at the highest point of the mountain (a great place to take photos), river beaches and the Lousã Castle.
As for gastronomy, the region has several traditional dishes such as chanfana de cabra (goat meat roasted with red wine) and dishes made with game meat such as wild boar and deer.
lso known as Arouce Castle, it is part of one of the first defensive lines created in the second half of the 11th century to control the southern access to Coimbra. According to an old legend, the castle has this name because it was built by the Moorish emir Arunce to protect his daughter Peralta and her treasures, after he had been defeated and expelled from Conimbriga.
Near the castle is the Nossa Senhora da Piedade river bathing complex. The main attractions here are a small waterfall where you can cool off and a swing over the water, perfect for a lovely photo.
Hidden in a small valley, Cerdeira was a village of schist houses at risk of disappearing after the abandonment of agricultural activity in the mid-20th century. In 2000, two families who had been friends for years decided to join forces to restore some of the village’s houses. Little by little, the Cerdeira Village project began to take shape until 2018, when it became Cerdeira – Home for Creativity, an arts community where creativity and nature serve all purposes.
In the São João river basin, this village nestles in a natural amphitheatre called Candal. Benefiting from ease of access compared to other villages, Candal is generally considered the most developed of the schist villages and is one of the most visited.
For a long time, Talasnal has been the schist village in the Serra da Lousã that has given the region the most visibility and charm. Its size and layout, together with the many details of the restoration of its houses, give this magical place a unique aura. Furthermore, it is a village that seduces us with some of the best delicacies of the mountain range.
A swing with a stunning view over the entire Serra da Lousã and surrounding area, the best way to end a wonderful day.
A relaxed day, but at the same time full of History, Culture, Landscapes, and Gastronomy.
Away from the crowded places, time to explore the calm and unique beauty of the Serra da Lousã and its Schist Villages.
