Hello from Portugal,
When most visitors plan a trip to Portugal, they focus on Lisbon, Sintra and Porto. These places are wonderful, but some of the country’s most authentic experiences can still be found away from the busiest tourist routes.
Today I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite regions, located less than an hour south of Lisbon: Arrábida, Setúbal and Sesimbra.
A Natural Paradise by the Atlantic
The Arrábida Natural Park is one of Portugal’s most spectacular protected landscapes.
Here, green mountains meet the deep blue Atlantic Ocean, creating scenery that surprises even seasoned travelers.
The winding coastal roads offer breathtaking viewpoints overlooking hidden beaches, dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters.
For nature lovers, photographers and anyone seeking tranquility, Arrábida is one of Portugal’s true treasures.
Setúbal’s Traditional Market I Mercado do Livramento
In the heart of Setúbal, you’ll find one of the most authentic food markets in Portugal: the Mercado do Livramento.
This is not just a market it is a living snapshot of Portuguese daily life.
Locals come here for fresh fish brought in every morning from the Atlantic, along with seasonal fruits, regional cheeses and traditional products from the Setúbal peninsula.
One of the highlights is the incredible display of fresh seafood, often considered among the best in the country.
For travelers, it is a perfect place to understand how deeply connected this region is to the ocean, food culture and tradition.
Ancient Roads I The Roman Heritage
Few visitors know that this region still preserves traces of Portugal’s Roman past.
Old Roman roads once connected Lisbon to the south of the country, passing through areas around Setúbal and the Arrábida hills.
Some sections and alignments are still visible today, especially in rural landscapes where time seems to have stopped.
Walking along these routes offers a fascinating connection between nature, history and ancient travel routes used over 2,000 years ago.
Wine with a View
This region is also home to excellent wineries and a centuries-old winemaking tradition.
A visit often includes walking through vineyards, learning about local grape varieties and enjoying wine tastings with stunning views over the countryside.
The famous Moscatel de Setúbal, one of Portugal’s most celebrated fortified wines, is produced here and offers a perfect introduction to the region’s wine culture.
The Art of Portuguese Tiles
One of the most fascinating experiences in the region is discovering the art of traditional Portuguese tiles.
During a workshop, visitors can learn how decorative ceramics evolved from Islamic and Hispano-Moorish influences before developing into the uniquely Portuguese style known today.
Guests can even try painting their own tile using traditional majolica techniques, a hands on experience that connects history, craftsmanship and creativity.
Sesimbra’s Medieval Castle
High above the fishing town stands the medieval Castle of Sesimbra.
Conquest during the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, it offers panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding hills.
It is one of the few Portuguese castles located so close to the sea.
Beaches Worth Discovering
The coastline around Sesimbra and Arrábida is home to some of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches.
Small coves, clear waters and protected natural surroundings create a peaceful atmosphere, even during the warmer months.
A Taste of the Sea
No visit to Sesimbra would be complete without experiencing the local gastronomy.
Fresh fish arrives daily from the harbor, and grilled seafood remains at the heart of local culinary traditions.
Many visitors say some of their best meals in Portugal happen here, overlooking the ocean.
A Different Side of Portugal
Arrábida, Setúbal and Sesimbra remind us that Portugal is much more than its famous landmarks.
It is a country of hidden viewpoints, ancient roads, family traditions, markets full of life and coastal communities that still preserve their identity.
