Amarante

Amarante

Amarante is a city that belongs to the Porto district in the Northern region of Portugal. It is located on the Tâmega riverside and not far from the Douro region.

This is a very picturesque city that combines the different charming elements of the North of Portugal.

Some say the city was funded by the Turdetani people in 350 B.C. while others claim that the founder was a Roman called Amarantus. However, the city gained recognition in the 13th century when São Gonçalo established himself here and built the famous bridge in Amarante. São Gonçalo was canonized by the Catholic Church but he is not a Saint. He has long been adored, particularly in this city, and people call him a saint.
