he Convent of São Francisco was founded in the 12th century, becoming the first house of the Franciscan Order in Portugal. The Church of São Francisco was remodeled at the end of the century. XV, is of Gothic-Manueline architecture and is related to the events that marked the period of maritime expansion.
The Capela dos Ossos is one of the best-known monuments in Évora and is located in what remains of the old Convent of São Francisco. The walls and eight pillars of the church are covered with around 5000 human skulls and countless bones, from the city’s cemeteries. It was built in the 17th century on the initiative of three friars with the aim of transmitting the message of the transience and fragility of human life. At the entrance, the warning: “We are here, we are waiting for you”.
The Roman Temple was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD and is located in the historic center of Évora. It is one of the city’s best-known landmarks and a symbol of the Roman presence in Portuguese territory.
Better known as Sé de Évora, it is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Its construction began in 1186 in granite and marks the transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic style.
