Ericeira

Ericeira the Fishing and Surfing Village

Ericeira is a small town in the Mafra district, not far from Lisbon known for being a fishing village.

Ericeira has grown in size and mainly in popularity since the last decades and its fishing and harbor past have given place to a touristic and surfing area.  Since it is quite close to Lisbon a lot of people spend their summer holidays in the Ericeira beach.

Tourism plays a fundamental role in the life and economy of Ericeira.

As the only world surfing reserve in Europe and the third largest in the world, the parish is known worldwide for its ideal conditions for surfing and bodyboarding, particularly on the beaches of Foz do Lizandro and Ribeira D’Ilhas, the latter of which hosted one of the stages of the ASP World Tour.

. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of facilities supporting the practice of these sports, including training centres, hostels for surfers and other types of infrastructure.

It is also the location of one of Portugal’s many summer festivals – Sumol Summer Fest – dedicated mostly to reggae music.

Ericeira is also the place where the remaining members of the royal family escaped by boat, leaving to exile after the regicide in the 20th century.
